Last year was the hottest in recorded history, and 2024 will likely top it as global thermometers continue to climb. Record-breaking heat waves drive home what science makes clear: temperatures are spiking as climate change heats the planet. 

But California’s leaders are taking action. State agencies and climate leaders are preparing for these worsening heat waves to help Californians live and thrive by taking priority actions called for in California’s 2022 Extreme Heat Action Plan, from improving outreach and advance notice of upcoming heat waves to adding shade trees to schoolyards and communities.
