LThe Los Angeles Metro Board voted today to place a transformative transportation plan for the region on the November 2016 ballot.
“For too long Los Angeles has topped lists as the nation’s leader in air pollution and traffic. By funding innovative projects, we can transform transportation in Los Angeles and reduce greenhouse gases in the process,” said Michael Swords, President of the Board at Climate Resolve and VP of Partnerships at LACI (Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator).
“This is a big step in helping our city and state meet greenhouse gas reductions and make lives better for Angelenos,” said Climate Resolve Executive Director Jonathan Parfrey. “Given the recent news that most of our nation’s emissions are driven—literally—by transportation, it is critical that we invest more in public transit and active transportation, and this ballot measure takes a big first step in that direction.”
Climate Resolve is a leading member of the EnviroMetro coalition, made up of LA and national organizations pushing for green, equitable, and healthy transportation in Los Angeles.
“A recent report revealed that transportation is responsible for almost 36% of greenhouse gas emissions in California and this measure will help us turn things around,” said Parfrey. “We have an opportunity here to lead the nation on climate action—and to make our lives better in the process.”
“We still have a lot of work to do,” said Parfrey. “We will continue to work with Metro to tie policies related to green infrastructure, regional active transportation, regional advanced mitigation, and clean goods movement to our transportation investments.”
