Suja Lowenthal has over 20 years of experience in local government and currently serves as the City Manager for the City of Hermosa Beach. Prior to this, Suja served as Transit Planning and Community Engagement Manager for the City of Santa Monica from 2012-2017, where she was responsible for regional intergovernmental transit planning and all other aspects of transit planning and community engagement for the Big Blue Bus regional transit agency. From 2017 through mid-2018, also with Santa Monica, Suja served as the Senior Advisor to the City Manager on airport affairs responsible for analyzing and addressing high-profile issues surrounding the Santa Monica Airport, among other management responsibilities.
Before joining Santa Monica, Suja served on the Long Beach City Council from 2006 through 2016, including serving as Vice-Mayor twice during her tenure. She served as an alternate member of the California Coastal Commission from 2007-2009, and served on the Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education from 2001 to 2006. Suja has experience with several water agencies as well, including the West Basin Municipal Water District in the South Bay and the Water Replenishment District in Cerritos, and with other local government offices such as the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles City Department of Aging.
Suja has earned degrees from UCLA and Cal State Los Angeles, and received a doctorate in planning, policy and development from USC. She and her husband live in Long Beach and Malibu, and together, they have five children.
