News: California Bills Introduced to Extend Cap and Trade and Clean the Air

Late yesterday, the California legislature and Governor Brown put the final touches on two bills that will help California continue to lead on climate action.
What you need to know
If approved, AB-398 will extend the cap-and-trade emissions reduction program until 2030. An accompanying bill, AB-617, will reduce air contaminants in California’s most polluted communities.
The two policies are absolutely essential for California to meet its ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030. Auctions from the cap-and-trade program will also provide billions of dollars for projects that will aid in the transition to a clean energy economy. The cap-and-trade funds may also be used to protect Californians from the damaging effects of climate change.
What we all need to do
Today — we are asking you to ACT IMMEDIATELY — and call BOTH your assembly member and your local senator to support AB-398 and AB-617.
In the face of the Trump administration’s actions to roll back climate progress, California must move forward. There is no choice — California must succeed!
Please act now:
STEP ONE. Find your legislator here.
STEP TWO. Call the district office. Tell the receptionist that you’re a constituent — and that you support AB-398 and AB-617 — the cap-and-trade bills — and expect your legislator to do the same.
What others are saying
“The legislation represents a big step forward to continue California’s global climate leadership. The concessions to industry are bitter pills, but on balance the package ensures our emissions limits are enforceable against polluters and secures critical gains to improve air quality for millions of Californians. The world is watching for California to chart a path.” — Alex Jackson, legal director of NRDC’s California climate project
“The Nature Conservancy has consistently supported actions to establish California’s 2020 and 2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals. Today, we announce our support for Assembly Bills 398 and 617 as the only viable path to continue California’s global leadership in addressing climate change. Passage of this legislative package is critically important to continue the State’s successful actions both to combat climate change and to catalyze the transition to a low carbon economy… At this moment, the continuity of California’s Cap-and-Trade program is essential for California’s economic and environmental future. This legislation is critically important to combat climate change and build confidence in the US and international community that climate action is a catalyst in the transition to a low carbon future.” — Jay Ziegler, California Director of External Affairs and Policy, The Nature Conservancy
