David Nahai is President of David Nahai Consulting Services, LLC, a partner and vice-chair of the Real Estate, Energy, Water, and Environment Practice at the Lewis Brisbois Law Firm, and managing partner at Aqora Capital Management Company, a growth capital firm focused on investment in “growth” stage companies in the sustainability field.
David’s success in both public and private sectors is apparent in his extensive list of positions and appointments. He is an accomplished transactional real estate and environmental lawyer with 30 years of experience, representing clients at the highest levels. He served as the CEO and General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), Chair of California’s Regional Water Quality Control Board (over 10 years), and Senior Advisor to the Clinton Climate Initiative, a division of the Clinton Foundation. At the Water Quality Board, David served three different Governors: Governor Pete Wilson, Governor Gray Davis, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Water Board’s prestigious annual awards were named after him (H. David Nahai Water Quality Awards) in recognition of his commitment to protect coastal areas and for launching some of the Board’s most aggressive programs.
With his expertise in real estate, energy, water, and environmental matters, David is a frequent speaker and radio guest on these issues and regularly contributes opinion pieces to The Los Angeles Times, The Los Angeles Daily News, The Huffington Post, and The Jewish Journal. In 2003, David received the Environmental Champion Award from the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters. Heal the Bay honored him as an environmental leader, and the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board awarded him for outstanding service in 2008. In 2012, he was accorded the Political Leadership Award by the Sierra Club, and in October 2013,, Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission honored David for his service.
David recently published his new book Commercial Real Estate Purchase and Sale Agreements in California– a Beginner’s Guide” and previously co-authored Inside the Minds: Strategies for Green Real Estate Law. His consulting firm advises and assists private and public entities in the environmental sector, with an emphasis on water, green real estate, infrastructure, renewable energy, and energy-efficiency projects. David currently sits on the Boards of the Los Angeles Business Council, California League of Conservation Voters, Heal the Bay, UCLA Luskin Center, Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, and Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI). He previously served on the Boards of philanthropies, such as the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles and the Iranian American Jewish Federation.
David holds graduate and post-graduate law degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of California, Berkeley. He was also a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley.
